I brought my neighbors, Rob and Kandace, to the 6:00 PM class on Tuesday at Grant Park. They are both tall and lean runner-types. Kandace played college basketball and Rob looks like he could have, too. Instead of opting for the JESSICA run around the rec center, I suggested they join me in the "Wall Ball/Pushup" exercise. What follows below my name is Rob's version of what happened next. What you should glean from this--like you saw last week on Bring-A-Friend day--is that our baseline fitness level (even when we're getting lapped by Jerome, Ed and Victoria) is pretty damn good. Viva la FitWit!

Rob's Story

Good Morning to all, and to all a good morning...
Since kandace and I moved into our new home our nice neighbor, Greg, has been trying to get kandace and I to go to his "Boot Camp" with him. Well, usually this is at 6 am so we don't make it, but yesterday I was all out of excuses. I called Kandace to ask her if she was interested, to which she replied:
"hmmm, I dunno. Am I gonna get a good workout? Perhaps we should run there to make sure we get in some good cardio."

Now... before this goes any further I shold explain our usual workout regimen. We ususally mosey on down to the gym, do some light stretching; Kandace will often hit the eliptical for 15-20 minutes while I begin my curls with 25lb barbells, rowing 100 lbs, benching 100lbs... and then maybe hitting the bike for 20 minutes before stretching again and going home to sip on a protein shake.

This routine usually has me feeling pretty good about myself physically and mentally so we're happy. It is for this reason that I approached yesterday with the same level of confidence one might a game of duck-duck-goose with a group of children (I do it all the time). We arrived at the "boot camp" and everyone was in high spirits. We started out with a light jog and then did some basic lunges, skywalks, twisty-runs (at this point I am out of my league and do not know the names of any of the following exercises) speedy jumping jacks, and some other stuff which was stored in brain-cells which have long since disintegrated in the wake of yesterday's maylay.

Now our workout began... with something called WALLBALLS.
We were all given medicine balls varying in weight. Kandace got a 10 pounder ( I believe) and I was given a 15 pounder. I approached the wall and awaited my instructions.
"Throw the ball 10 feet in the air against the wall and as you catch it come down into a full squat before stretching upright to throw it up once more. Do this 50 times..." (wait. did that guy just say FIFTY times? You see... the word and number fifty never appear in my workouts unless im counting the seconds between sets.)" ... when you've done fifty wallballs, drop and give me fifty push ups..." (now, hold on just a second there franky. 50? 50 pushups??? ON A GOOD DAY, I can pump out 20 in a row before collapsing onto my now-gelatinous arms. FIFTY? ahhh what the hell.) "...when you finish your pushups, go back to the wall and do 40 more, then 30, 20, and so on." (...148...149...150. yeah, that comes out to one hundred and fifty pushups. Well, here goes nothing."

Half way through hurling this ball madly into the air and watching it loosen a brick from the top of my wall (as i prayed it would land on my face and render me unconcious) a little bit more each time, I realized I had not been counting and had no idea how many times I had thrown my ball in the air. This was made even more difficult by the commands informing me that my butt was not going low enough or my ball was not going up high enough...so I moved on to the push ups. I breezed through the first 20. And then the sweat started. I dont know if youve ever sweat so bad that it burned your eyes but thats where I was. My vision was so bad in fact that when the group all finished their WALLBALLS challenge and moved on to THE NEXT WORKOUT, I was alone doing girl-push-ups off my knees groaning in agony while a lady (whom I did not make out as my neighbor from across the street due to the fireworks of brain cells exploding in my head and eyes) stood over me with a clipboard and the same concerned look a vet must give a cat in labor.
When I finally joined the others they were in the throws of some some inquisition-relic-exercise-circuit that involved inverted rowing, laps of lunges, and the a brief jog that felt like the final four miles of a marathon. Needless to say, I was DESTROYED.
Kandace is physically, the toughest person I know. She went through this sort of training every day of her life for years, and even she looked at me at one point and said "I can't do this."

But she did... and I did (sort of). And so, it is with great humility and a body SORE-as-SHIT that I write you this letter, to inform you that if you want the workout of a lifetime, find a bootcamp group near you and try it out. As for me, I have to really think about whether or not I can ever subject myself to that again... I think - for the sake of conqueing the wallball - I just might. Thanks for reading.
