To everyone who heard me complaining back in February that it was too cold for boot camp: I take it all back.

The heat is the most performance killing factor I've dealt with so far.

Anyone have tips on how to acclimate?

20 minutes in an ice bath before camp....just kidding. No, I'd like to know too. I was actually starting to get the chills during the track work...not good!

Try out 6 pm for a few days. :) 6 am will feel quite chilly.

bg,

Drink lots and lots of water. A couple of glasses before camp and a whole bunch throughout. And more when you get home. Also consider the dryfit or sleeveless shirts. It's not getting any cooler out there. Just be glad we're in the morning. I did Friday afternoon's tabata in the heat (even though we were in the shade) and that royally sucked. Those evening campers are cut from a little sturdier cloth than we mornin' folks.

I don't know about you, but I find that even after I get home and shower, I tend to perspire after getting dressed in my work clothes.

The Wheel was no joke. I thought that sumbitch looked easy the last time you ran it and I missed my turn. It sums up one of the universal truths about FitWit: none of the individual exercises we do are that taxing one-at-a-time. But 15 hard minutes of the Wheel was way more tiring than I could have imagined.

Makes me want to haiku:

The Wheel ain't no joke
Five exercises times three
Harder than it looks

Newbies:
Congrats on completing the mile. That, more than anything, gives me nightmares. The first two times we ran it, I had to walk each time. Each successive time, however, I've managed to carve a few seconds here and there off of my time. I wasn't trying to shave time, but was just trying to complete each lap without having to walk. You will surprise yourself by the end of the camp when we run it again--yes, we WILL run it again--by how much better you will do. Good job.

Another haiku:

Super vets, hydrate
Fifty-two eighty is nigh
I hate the damn mile!

Brad,

I'm out of the office until Wed., but when I get back, I'll post a blog entry on dealing with the heat. There are some things we can do to help us get through it.

As for running in the heat, you must factor it into the equation when you're considering a "good" time. When people run 5k or more, they generally go by this heat/humidity rule:
slow down by 30 sec a mile for every 5 degree temperature increase above 60F.

Ok, I'm throwing down a challange for myself to get a sub 10 minute mile. Wish me luck
